DiPel® DF is a biological insecticide which has specific action against lepidopterous caterpillars. DiPel® DF can be used in a variety of situations including amenity vegetation and ornamental plant production. It can be applied up to eight times per year at a rate of 0.75-1.0 kg/ha.
DiPel® DF contains the naturally occurring microbe, bacillus thuringiensis. DiPel® DF works rapidly; stopping caterpillars from feeding immediately and control occurring within 24-72 hours after they have ingested plants treated with the insecticide.
The strain of Bacillus thuringiensis that is used in DiPel® DF makes toxic proteins that are specifically toxic to the caterpillars of butterflies and moths. This means that DiPel® DF does not harm bees or other beneficial insects.
DiPel® DF is biodegradable and can be used on many edible crops as well as in ornamental plant production and amenity vegetation. It has a pre-harvest interval of just one day.
Instructions for use
Where to use
DiPel® DF has on label approval for use on the following crops:
- Outdoor edible crops: Globe artichokes, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, leeks, combining, vining and edible podded peas
- Protected Vegetables: Aubergine, broad bean, dwarf French bean, runner bean, cucumber, pepper, strawberry, chilli and tomato
- Ornamental Plant Production
- Amenity vegetation
DiPel® DF also has Extension of Authorisation for Minor Use (EAMU)* approvals for a variety of crops including:
- Forestry: For control of oak processionary moth
- Edible crops: EAMUs for various protected and outdoor edible crops
*Consult the EAMU text for specific conditions before use.
When to use
- DiPel® DF should be applied as soon as the first caterpillars are seen, preferably during an active feeding period.
- Repeat applications every 7-10 days until the end of the hatching period
How to use
- Ensure spray tank is clean and half fill with water.
- Start agitator and slowly sprinkle the required amount of granules into the centre of the agitator vortex.
- Continue agitating for a few minutes and complete filling with water to the required spray volume.
- During spraying agitate as necessary to maintain the suspension.
- DiPel® DF can be applied through a knapsack or vehicle mounted hydraulic sprayer (boom sprayer) or through a suitable broadcast air-assisted sprayer.
- A fine spray quality should be used and the foliage covered thoroughly, but not to the point of run-off, to ensure good control.

Active substances
Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki ABTS-351
Chemical group: Bacillus thuringiensis belongs to the microbial disruptors of insect midgut membranes group of insecticides.
Bio-chemical mode of action: Microbial disruptors work by binding protein toxins to receptors on the midgut membrane of the insect. This induces pore formation, resulting in ionic imbalance and septicaemia.
Mobility: Bacillus thuringiensis is a biological insecticide which acts on the target larvae following ingestion of treated parts of the plant.
Application timing: Bacillus thuringiensis is best applied at the first signs of the pest species.
Resistance: To reduce the risk of resistance, insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis should be used as part of an integrated pest management programme and alternated with other chemical and non-chemical methods of control. DiPel® DF should be applied no more than 3 times per generation of the pest species.
